Our principle Kung Fu style is Tien Shan Pai, a northern style that originated in the Tien Shan mountains of northwestern China. It is well known as an effective fighting style. At the same time, Tien Shan Pai also contains graceful emptyhand and weapons forms stressing rhythm and “ing shou” the demonstration of power accentuated by solid thuds made by the hands. Tien Shan Pai self-defense techniques are characterized by attacks from the side coupled with multiple blocks so that if one block fails, the second can cover. Footwork is considered essential to countering attacks; Tien Shan Pai focuses on low, steady steps to the side, along with swift “hidden” steps to trick the opponent.

Adult Martial Arts & Kung Fu

Children’s Martial Arts at the U.S. Kuo Shu Academy are anything but an ordinary sport or extra-curricular activity. In fact, at Kuo Shu, we study Kung Fu, which is commonly thought of as the Granddaddy of Asian martial arts. Kung Fu was made popular by famous practitioners such as Bruce Lee, Jet Li, and Jackie Chan.

We teach traditional Chinese Kung Fu that includes so much more than just breaking boards and learning how to kick and punch. A well-rounded program, we utilize all of the traditions of Kung Fu to contribute to your child’s growth and development in all facets of life.

Children's Martial Arts

From an outsider’s perspective, martial arts in general appear to be a very “external” activity. But nothing could be further from the truth. All styles of Chinese martial arts have elements that are both “internal” and “external,” however some focus more on one than the other. The arts of Tai Ji Quan (Tai Chi Chuan), Xing Yi Quan (Hsing I Chuan), and Ba Gua Zhang (Pa Kua Chang) are considered “internal,” focusing on the use of meditative practices and full body coordination. Each of these internal martial arts emphasizes specific characteristics that give them a unique flavor and appearance. All three styles include training in empty hand forms, weapons forms, two person drills, self-defense applications, free fighting techniques and power development. At the US Kuo Shu Academy, you can benefit from instruction in any of these arts.
